Flannel-ly Goodness

Whew, been a bit of time since an actual sewing post has been on here
betwene the move, enjoying summer and starting my new job...
its been a bit crazy
BUT I do have things to show you.. soon.

A few months ago I saw this quilt on Aesthetic Nest and fell in love. Bonus - there was a tutorial!

So of course, I had to try, it just looks so soft and cuddly!
I liked it so much, I made two!

close up of the front after washing

crinkly goodness!

Serious warmth in these

Each of them has 3 layers of flannel
I chose the same colors in graduated fashion

These of course have already been claimed by family members
not much need for them in Hawaii ;)

Definitely a more time consuming project, but it was great to have it on hand
and when I needed something mindless to do i'd sew a few rows

Keep in mind, all that cutting, I definitely wore out my scissors!

As always,

Fresh and New

Well, in keeping with this new move,
I decided to try something else new that i've been eyeing for a while..
After seeing Debbie's beautiful quilt

I joined a 3x6 Sampler Quilt Mini Bee which can be found here
I'm in a paper piecing hive!!

Sign-ups are still going on if you're interested!
The bee runs from August 1- October 15
and you're responsible for 6 blocks (7 including yourself)
to be made in that time period
the blocks are the same, the colors used are designated by the people you're making them for!

What have you tried that was new lately?

What do you mean I'm moving??

You'd never know I was moving in this house.. unless you saw my flat rate boxes packed with sewing supplies :)

I'm procrastinating on the actual packing though.. instead, i'm making things!
My mom brought this Hawaiian fabric home from Maui in January
with a request for a bag
With the Purse Palooza happening,
I had plenty of options!

This is the "Naughty Secretary Bag"
which I found funny because my mom was a secretary

bright blue/green for the lining

My parting gift to momma before I leave?
Does that warrant the distraction from packing?

back to the grind

Finish-a-Long Quarter 3

Well I was able to make some pretty good progress last quarter, so this quarter I'd like to do more of the same..

1. Finish Made in Cherry quilt - been on hold for far too long

2. Finish We Bee Modern Too quilt - I got all the squares, I want to make a few more and complete it!

3. Attempt some traditional Hawaiian appliqué (seriously, what better way to commemorate my time there??) - Maybe one block?
4. Participate in the How Far Will You Go? QAL - staying up to date

Well, that along with moving should be enough to keep me busy.. back to packing :)

Chasing Chevrons

Whoops, was writing my Finish-a-Long 2nd quarter post
and realized I had never shown this!

Back in May I completed my Chasing Chevrons quilt top!
I used That girl..That quilt's QAL posts

I decided to quilt in a giant chevron and echo it in one inch sections

This was made and presented to some friends that are
getting married at the end of July!
They loved it!

Earlier this year I started working on a Lizzie Kate Halloween Sampler

I had wanted to complete letter C-Z

I finished it all!!!

Now I just need to frame it!

Let's Get Acquainted

Welcome to Knotted-Thread, one of the blogs on the Let's Get Acquainted blog hop!

So, the point of this swap is to "get acquainted" and get to know each other better.
So for those of you who are first time visitors.. HI! My name is Jennifer
and i'm a 20-something quilter/blogger. I've been blogging
for a little less than a year, and quilting for about 18 months (avidly)
I'm currently in the process of making a HUGE move
(from the east coast of the US to Hawaii!)
later this month.

Here are a few of my favorite projects so far:

Beth, our fearless leader of the Blog Hop suggested a little Q&A
so here we go..

How long have you been quilting
I've been avidly quilting for about a year and a half
I had been exposed to quilting through my mom before that
but never personally got interested until later on..

       Favorite blogging tip
Be yourself!
Don't worry about followers and your stats.
You will go crazy looking at these, I did too when I first started blogging
and it really takes the fun out of it.

Favorite fabric
Kate Spain anything!

Favorite quilting tool
Normally I would say my water-soluble marker.. but
then I had this fiasco, so I'm going to retract that
and say a Hera marker now :)

Now, since the theme of the blog hop is novelty prints
I decided to go with the classic I-spy... with a twist.

Personally, part of the fun of I-spy books were playing with the magnifying glass
So, I decided to made a pocket for the magnifying glass within
the I-Spy quilt!

Now, the post is word/picture heavy so I decided to do a separate post (here)
or a printable pdf file (here)

Now, I'm thinking it would be a fun idea to host an I-spy swap
as an appendage to my post
So, if you're interested, leave me a comment
We'll do 56 people, 1 yard of fabric apiece.

Now, the tricky part.. i'm moving in 2 weeks,
so I'll hold sign-ups now, but
no one will be sending fabric until after July 16th!
(gives us time to fill up the swap also)

Once you've commented,
I will email you with the link to the flickr group and more information.

Don't forget to go see Diane at Willowbeck Designs, she's posting today too!

Later this week, Thursday be sure to check out

I-Spy Magnifying Glass Pocket

I-Spy Magnifying Glass Pocket Tutorial

-       10” zipper (or larger that can be cut to size)
-       (2) 10” x 6” piece of fabric
o   piece for front of pocket
o   piece for pocket lining
-       (2) 10” x 5” piece of fabric
o   piece for front of pocket
o   piece for pocket lining
-       9.5” x9.5” piece for pocket lining
-       fusible webbing (I use Pellon 805)
-       Scrap pieces for magnifying glass and lens
-       pins
-       zipper foot (optional)
     magnifying glass template

You’re going to want to cut your pieces and gather your supplies. I chose a solid for my font of the pocket and the floral for the lining.

Next, trace the magnifying glass picture onto the paper side of the fusible webbing (keep in mind you’ll have a mirror image so depending on which way you want your magnifying glass to face) Iron the fusible webbing (paper side up!) to the fabric you want to use for your magnifying glass and the lens (I chose charcoal and white)

Once your webbing is ironed to the fabric, cut out your pieces and remove the paper from the webbing.

Take your 10”x 6” piece that you are using for the front of the pocket and iron your magnifying glass pieces to this piece. (I recommend placing your lens piece on top of the magnifying glass piece and ironing together)

Once these are ironed in place, stitch around the edges however you’d prefer to applique them in place (I used a straight stitch on the charcoal magnifying glass and a blanket stitch around the lens, just to switch it up!)

Use the method you are most comfortable with to install the zipper – there are some great tutorials (

Once you have your zipper installed, trim it 9.5” x 9.5” – Take your lining piece that is 9.5” x 9.5”

Place these pieces (lining pieces right sides together) – in other words, put your zipper piece on top of the lining piece

Pin in place and sew around using a ¼ seam allowance.

You should have a complete pocket at this point.

Layout your quilt as you want it – You’re pocket will take the place of 4 charms

Sew your rows together as you normally would, and when you get to the rows where the pocket is sew the charms together before sewing the pocket.

Then, attach the 2 rows to one side of the pocket, iron away from the pocket, and do the same to the other side.

Line up the pocket the with rows as you would anything else…

And Voila! Completed quilt top.

Back, quilt and bind as you prefer.  Then fill your pocket with some magnifying glasses for the little ones to play with!!

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask!
